Second, whatever their response is, that’s wonderful. Be generous in your praise and thanks. If you look for your audience to interact with you, remember that you’re benefitting from adrenaline, and the audience is not. So when you ask a question, be prepared to wait for a couple of years before the audience responds. At least, it will seem that long to you, but for the audience it will be no more than six seconds. That’s the longest that a (polite) audience will let the silence rule. And that’s how long it can take them to answer you.
Remember, a speech is not primarily about you, the speaker. It’s about whether or not the audience is moved to action. So relax, forget about you, and have fun. The other question I get all the time is, how do I deal with my nerves? And the answer to that is three-fold. First, breathe deeply and slowly in the five or 10 minutes before you start to speak, long breaths from the belly. Second, whenever you start to worry, start a conversation with yourself along the following lines: “I’ve rehearsed, I know my topic.
Then read the speech all the way through, out loud, as if you had an audience. But, of course, you won’t have an audience, unless it’s a compliant pet. Don’t skip this step. This exercise is important, because you’ll find out where the holes are in your talk. Once you’ve determined the flow of the words, then and only then have a look at the speech again to see whether you need PowerPoint slides. Never, ever, use PowerPoint (or any other program) as speaker notes. Speaker notes should be for the speaker alone.
