The reviewer took offence at Poe’s position in ‘Letter to Mr ––’, that ‘none but poets are capable of forming a true estimate, or passing a correct judgment on poetry’. If that’s the way Poe wanted it, so be it.

Whereas the speaker of ‘The Lake’ shifts to the third person to lament his lost youth, Tamerlane continues to speak in the first person, wondering: How could I from that water bring Solace to my imagining?
