Engstrom’s remark: ‘If the basic law of pure practical reason is a fact in the sense just indicated, then showing that pure reason is practical must be a matter of drawing attention to this law, of directing thought to it in a way that clearly reveals its basis in reason and thereby puts us in a position to achieve a reflective (philosophical) recognition of it as given in us by reason’ [72, p. xlii]. Kantian Morality and Estrangement 23 assume responsibility for their judgments and actions, by holding themselves accountable to mutually acceptable standards.

I at once become aware that such a principle, as a law, would annihilate itself since it would bring it about that there would be no deposits at all [68; 66, 5:27]. Acting on the maxim as anticipated presupposes that there is a practice of leaving deposits. But such a practice would not survive in a society in which people generally denied deposits that no one could prove had been made. 20 Hegel raises a number of objections to this example and to similar ones. One of the most challenging is that the contradiction does not show that the action on the maxim is wrong unless the practice of leaving deposits (a practice Hegel refers to as ‘property’) itself can be justified.

What it needs is to be comprehended as well, so that the content which is already rational in itself may also gain a rational form and thereby appear justified to free thinking. For such thinking does not stop at what is given. . but starts out from itself and thereby demands to know itself as united in its innermost being with the truth’ [52, p. 11; 57, 7:13–14]. 4 With respect to the four forms of freedom we’ve discussed—personal, moral, social, and speculative—the implications for estrangement include the following: An attempted realization of any of these forms (except the last) in abstraction from the next would be a realization of reason in an unreasonable form, and hence a form of estrangement.
