In practice, however, some areas of science have become so esoteric, so far removed from ordinary life, and so successful both in their own terms and in terms which common sense respects, as to have been effectively removed from dialogue.  Whenever a science has direct or immediately foreseeable impact on ordinary life or moral questions, it behoves common sense to reopen the dialogue, rather than to accept the science uncritically.  In such an area, science will never criticize itself; common sense, common experience, and ordinary values structured in philosophical, Socratic dialectic must be brought to bear upon it.
